Ideal Applications

A robot that can reach the part still has to hold it, and grip is where cells fail. The question is whether the part changes, because that decides electric or pneumatic before anything else.

GEP2000 electric grippers adjust from 80 to 500 N with IO-Link feedback and self-locking jaws, so grip force becomes a setting you change in software. GPP5000 pneumatics cover the harsh and heavy end, where air is already on the machine and the part is not changing.

For collaborative cells, HRC-certified grippers meet ISO/TS 15066 so the cobot can stay fenceless. ZGA, ZGB and ZGM vacuum gripping with Smart Cup and Magic Cup quick-change covers the parts a jaw suits badly, and WPR5000 tool changers swap end-of-arm tooling without taking the cell down.

Electric grippers run about 10 million maintenance-free cycles, and sizing comes from friction pairing, jaw stroke, and your robot’s acceleration, so the answer is arithmetic. Send us the part and the robot and we will spec the tooling.

When do I need a robot tool changer?

When one arm has more than one job: mixed part families, a gripper and a vacuum head on the same cell, or a process tool that swaps with a handling tool. The changer pays for itself the first time you'd otherwise have bought a second robot or stopped the line for a manual tool swap. If the robot runs one tool forever, skip it.

What tool changers does Zimmer make?

The WPR5000 series is the core line, sized by the standardized robot-flange pitch circle (EN ISO 9409-1), so the changer matches your wrist bolt pattern by name. Around it sit the HWR, FWR, and WWR families, and the WMR2000 aseptic changer for pharma and sterile lines. Air, electrical, and signal pass through the coupler, so the tool that locks on is live.

Should I choose an electric or a pneumatic gripper?

Pneumatic (the GPP5000 family, steel-in-steel guide, rated to 30 million maintenance-free cycles) for the harsh, fast, and simple end. Electric (the GEP families, about 10 million maintenance-free cycles) when you need adjustable force, position feedback, or recipe changes: an IO-Link electric gripper stops anywhere in the stroke and stores part settings, so a mixed-SKU line changes over in software.

Can I get the STEP file before I commit?

Yes. CAD for grippers and tool changers is available up front, so the EOAT is designed into the cell before anything is ordered.

Do Zimmer grippers work in collaborative cells?

Yes. Zimmer builds HRC-certified grippers designed to ISO/TS 15066 for cells where people and robots share space.

Can I get the gripper, vacuum, and tool changer from one vendor?

That's Zimmer's pitch: gripper, vacuum, magnet, or hybrid from a single source, plus the tool changers that swap between them. For deep vacuum sizing on demanding parts, Schmalz is our specialist lane, and we carry both, so you get the right tool either way.
