Most press purchases start with a question about force. Force matters, but it rarely separates the budgets. What separates them is whether the press has to prove, part by part, that the joint was made correctly, and that one requirement moves the quote more than tonnage does.

The documentation requirement comes first

If a medical, aerospace, or automotive audit will ever ask you to show that a joint was good, the press needs force and distance monitoring. It measures the force-distance curve of every cycle (the signature of the joint as it forms) and keeps the record. That capability is what separates a monitored servo press from everything below it. A press sized on tonnage alone seats the part fine and can't prove it did, and that gap tends to surface months later as a documentation problem on a working line.

The mechanism class is the budget class

A manual bench press, a pneumatic press, and a programmable servo press are three different budgets. Manual is the right answer at bench volumes with no documentation requirement. A servo earns its price when the process needs programmable stroke, force monitoring, or one machine running a family of parts on stored recipes.

Tooling and the part family

The tooling that holds and locates your part is engineered per part. A family of parts on one press means tooling for each variant or recipe-driven flexibility, and the choice shows up in the quote. It's also where a low quote hides its assumptions, so check how many variants the tooling covers.

Headroom, sized to the joint

Guarding and integration

A press in a cell needs guarding the risk assessment signs off on, plus whatever ties it into the line: part-presence checks, reject handling, data out to your quality system. A standalone bench press needs little of this. An inline station needs it priced.
